iPhone and BlackBerry Bans in Argentina

Posted by admin on Sunday 1 January 2012

The Argentine government has banned the import and sale for Apple iPhone and all type of BlackBerry smartphones. The ban also extends to all foreign-made mobile phones, but it seems that Apple and RIM are among some of the major mobile phone manufacturers who do not have factories in Argentina, so that this prohibition does not apply to Nokia, Samsung, LG and Motorola that have set up a factory in Argentina . That way they all get away from government restrictions.

Unfortunately, Apple and RIM are not so lucky. Their only option is to build a plant in Argentina. RIM is looking for partners to do so, while we have no info about Apple's plans.
The ban is part of the government's anti-crisis policy and temporary, until the Argentine economy back to health. Apple and RIM reportedly holds about 60% of the smartphone market of Argentina, this would be a blow to RIM and Apple, and we'll see some kind of response from them soon.
